Matt Nandin
Head Coach Marissa Lamison-Myers announced the hiring of assistant coach Matt Nandin in August 2019.
Nandin helped guide the Raiders back to the Patriot League tournament in 2021 behind 13 conference victories, their most since securing the regular season title with 16 in 2011. Once again working with the hitters, Colgate ranked atop the Patriot League in home runs for the third consecutive year with 26. Nandin and the staff saw Colgate’s batting average jump from .245 to .290 in 2021, which was good for third-best in the Patriot League. The Raiders also ranked No. 3 in the conference in hits (231), doubles (54), walks (69), and runs (134).
In his first season as an assistant coach, Nandin helped lead Colgate to its best 15-game start since 2010 with a 10-5 mark. The Raiders finished 12-8 and were on pace to eclipse the previous year's win total for the third consecutive year before the season was cut short. Colgate paced the Patriot League in home runs (19), with the next closest team at 10. The Raiders as a team also led the Patriot League in walks (65) and ranked second in the Patriot League in hits (133), triples (4), and runs scored (88) with a .245 team batting average.
Nandin comes to Colgate after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina from 2015-2017. Prior to his experiences in Greenville, N.C., Nandin held the same post at Syracuse from 2013-2015.
Working primarily with the hitters at East Carolina, Nandin helped his team improve its win total by seven and saw increases in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, and home runs in his first season.
In 2017, Nandin helped recruit the No. 22 recruiting class in the country according to Flosoftball.com. That season, East Carolina set single-season school and AAC records for home runs, and ranked in the top 10 nationally in home runs per game.
Prior to his work at East Carolina, Nandin spent two years at Syracuse as the hitting coach. During his time with Syracuse, Nandin played a crucial role in the offensive production of the Orange. In his first year with the squad, he helped increase the team's batting average by 64 points for a school-record .290 clip. Under his tutelage, the Orange set single-season records for team batting average, on-base percentage (.376) and slugging percentage (.487). The team's on-base and slugging percentage were ranked in the top four in the ACC.
With Nandin mentoring hitters, Syracuse ranked 16th in the nation in home runs per game, 26th in doubles per game, and 31st in slugging percentage during the 2014 season. The Orange's homers per game and doubles per game marked program highs, while the team's 5.1 runs per game were also the second-best total in school history. Additionally, the team's runs per game increased by just over one per game from 2013, while Syracuse also saw its lowest strikeout total in five years.
Prior to coaching softball Nandin spent the past three seasons as the Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Le Moyne. Although he assisted in all aspects of the baseball program, Nandin’s primary responsibility was working with infielders and hitters.
Upon graduating, Nandin signed a professional contract with the American Defenders of the Can-Am League. Following a brief stop in Colombia, where as an All-Star second baseman he helped lead Caimanes De Barranquilla to the Colombian Winter League Championship, Nandin returned to the United States as a member of the Pittsfield Colonials where he played for two seasons.
In his first season with the Colonials, Nandin was an All-Star at shortstop and led the league with 25 doubles, while ranking third in hits (118), fourth in batting average (.321) and fifth in stolen bases (25). He split the 2012 season between the Rockland Boulders and the New Jersey Jackals before being re-acquired by the Boulders for 2013.
After winning the Can-Am League Championship in 2014, finishing in the top 10 in league batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles, hit by pitch and leading all second basemen in fielding percentage (.988), Nandin decided to hang up the cleats after six years of playing in the pros.
A career batting average of .288 led Nandin to the Can-Am League record book where he finished sixth all-time in doubles and ninth in runs scored and hits.
