Jose Gonzalez

Gonzalez enters his seventh season as the Head Coach for the SSU Lady Tiger’s softball team. Gonzalez has been instrumental in the turn-around of SSU’s softball program, after inheriting a team that had only nine Division I wins in the previous five seasons.

Gonzalez holds the best coaching record for Savannah State softball since the program’s inception, at 78-134. In the 2012 season, Savannah State’s first year competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Gonzalez led the team to a 26-24 overall mark, and claimed the regular season MEAC Southern Division Title with a 12-3 conference record. It was the first winning season in SSU softball history.

Prior to taking over the SSU softball program Gonzalez came to SSU as a linebackers coach. He also coached defensive backs and was the special team’s coordinator for the SSU football team from 2007 to 2010 under head coaches Theo Lemon and Robbie Wells.

Gonzalez was the assistant head baseball coach at Englewood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, from 1999-2001. While at Englewood, he assisted in coaching the perennial power house to 32 wins, and a state championship during his two year stint. He also coached two players currently playing in the Major Leagues; Brett Meyers of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Daniel Murphy, of the Kansas City Royals.

Before beginning his coaching career, Gonzalez played for three years on the Post 88 club baseball team in Jacksonville. He also played high school baseball under the legendary Jack Spencer at Englewood High alongside long-time Cincinnati Reds third baseman Ryan Freel. He was a three year letter winner and earned All-Conference Honors. Gonzalez also earned baseball scholarships to three different schools before accepting a football scholarship at Southern Mississippi.

The Jacksonville, Fl. native earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2000.

Gonzalez and his wife, Malinda, have a son Cameron. He also has three other children; Quincy, Gabriel, and Cayden.
