Head Coach Jim Clift completed his 13th season at the helm of Western Carolina softball in 2024. In 2021 his 10th season at the helm he led the team to its best performance in the program's 19-year history. For his efforts, Clift earned his first-ever Southern Conference Coach of the Year honor - and only the second in the team's history.
In 2024, the Catamounts were led by SoCon Co-Freshman of the Year Lily Bell as the freshman standout broke the program’s single-season hit record with 72 and the stolen base record with 34. Bell joined ace pitcher Tessa Juett who claimed first-team honors as Bell, Sydney Dirks and Maya McPherson each were named to the league’s all-freshman team. With their win on March 29th over Mercer, Jim Clift eclipsed the 250 win plateau at WCU. Juett moved into numerous top 10 spots in the program’s career record book including fourth with 27 wins, fourth in starts with 63, third in innings pitched at 398.0, and sixth in strikeouts with 321, becoming the sixth pitcher in program history to eclipse 300 strikeouts in her time in Cullowhee. Dirks and Juett earned SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Week honors following the April 7th weekend that saw WCU defeat ETSU and N.C. Central.
In 2023, Huneycutt, a first-team All-Southern Conference selection, was one of two All-Mideast Region players from the Southern Conference as she set the program's career record in doubles and total hits during the 2023 SoCon tournament. Huneycutt concludes her career as the program leader in runs scored (123), hits (196), doubles (38), home runs (46), RBI (142), total bases (376), walks (102), and double plays turned (45). She is the single-season program record holder in on base percentage (.497 – 2021), double plays turned (18 – 2019), and tied for first in intentional walks (2 – 2021). Brooklyn Brewington also garnered first team honors following the 2023 season.
In 2022, Bailey Hunneycutt earned first team all-conference honors following 15 homers and 50 RBIs. Savannah Rice (First Team), Myra Twitty (Second Team) and Brooklyn Brewington (Second Team) also garnered all-conference honors. Twitty along with Jayme Eilers each earned SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Week once during the 2022 season. Huneycutt's 15 homers stood as the fourth most in program history and also broke the program's career record.
Tabbed to finish seventh in the coaches' preseason poll before the 2021 season, Clift guided the Catamounts to a second-place finish and a No. 2 seed in the SoCon Championship. It was the second-highest finish for the Catamounts and the runner-up finish in the conference tournament was also the best for the program.
With Clift's guidance in 2021, Bailey Huneycutt earned SoCon Player of the Year, a first for Catamount softball, and also a record-setting five players earned post-season honors: Huneycutt (Player of the Year, First Team All-SoCon), Jayme Eilers (First Team All-SoCon, SoCon All-Freshman), Kailey McNeil (First Team All-SoCon), Savannah Rice (SoCon All-Freshman) and Jeralynn Wells (SoCon All-Freshman). There were also four SoCon All-Tournament selections at the completion of the tournament: Eilers, McNeil, Addie Pate and Myra Twitty as the Catamounts had the most placed on the all-tournament team.
All told in his 13 seasons, Clift has had 13 SoCon First Team selection, eight second-team all-conference, 14 all-freshman selections, and 11 SoCon All-Tournament honorees. Under his watchful eye, the Catamounts have had four NFCA All-Region selections Bailey Huneycutt (3rd team, 2023) Bailey Huneyctt (3rd team, 2021), Crystal Cyr (2nd team 2016) and Erin Foster (1st team, 2012). Also in the 2016 season, the team had the highest GPA, 3.673, in all of NCAA Division I softball.

WCU ended the season 21-32 with key victories over Jacksonville State and a doubleheader sweep of Georgia State. As the No. 7 seed, WCU ousted No. 2 seed Samford 6-4 in the opening round of the 2019 Southern Conference Championships.
In the 2017 season, with a team only boasting three seniors, Clift made a nice run to close out the season including splitting a doubleheader with ACC foe Virginia Tech and taking the SoCon series from 2016 SoCon Champion Samford – it was the fifth time out of the last six series against the Bulldogs the Catamounts have earned the series win.
Clift guided the 2016 club to the best performance since the inception of the team in 2006.
